March Meeting --Thursday, March 8, 2012

Gas Detection Systems

The types of gas detectors that will be discussed generally deal with combustible, toxic or oxygen gas detection. Flame Detection will also be touched on during this presentation as it is also a growing concern to Industrial customers. Specifying gas detection devices needs specific knowledge of the various detection methods, hardware, response time, and the effect of other gasses that could be present and plus general maintenance required. Some applications just need a passive sensor but others will work better with aspirated or pumped gas. Location of the detectors is also important and depends on many factors that will be discussed during this presentation. There are several technologies that will be discussed from single point sensors to Open Path sensors that look over a large area. These devices can be wired as 4-20 ma signal or digital signal directly to a DCS, SCADA or PLC but there is also separate Controller displays that could possibly offer advantages, like adding redundancy to your safety system. Frank will discuss upcoming technology for these types of gas detectors and display some of the sensor hardware.
