Dominion East Ohio
Tour of Gas Control Center
Dominion East Ohio is a natural gas distribution company serving over 1.2 million residential and commercial
customers in NE Ohio, including Cleveland, Akron, Canton Youngstown, and Lima. Dominion operates one of the
nation’s largest storage pools. We will be visiting the control center where the gas transmission pipeline is managed.
The gas controller (who we normally refer to as an "operator") using a commercial controls platform referred to as a
supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA), operates remote control valves, regulators, and storage withdrawal
stations to maintain
sufficient pressures and volumes in the pipelines to serve their customers.
Our visit will start with overview of the Dominion system, including the number of customers, miles of pipelines and how gas
moves from the source to the customer. We will then split the group up to visit the Control Room and the Automation lab. In the
Control Room we’ll be given a live demonstration on how the controller keeps the system stable and prepares for changes in
requirements. We’ll see how the controller uses the SCADA data and alarming. We will learn about alarm rationalization,
controller training, mitigating controller fatigue, and emergency escalation. In the Automation & Controls lab we will see
how Dominion tests and prepares for the new equipment prior to installation in the field. After the tour we will regroup for any
additional questions.

From East 55th Street north, look for the facility entrance to the right (east) BEFORE the underpass for the rail line.
Turn in and a representative will meet you at the gate. Once inside, proceed east to the second building; around to the left
and then right and park near a hard-to-see handicapped entrance and door. Another representative will let you in and guide you
to the meeting room. Please
