Tuning - Keeping an Eye on Your Process

About the Topic:

PID controllers are the generally accepted foundation of industrial process control. In most of the cases they have a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: they reduce variability, improve quality and throughput, and decrease energy costs and raw material usage. This presentation goes beyond controller tuning techniques, and provides some practical insight for process optimization by keeping an eye on the control system performance.

Poor control system performance is usually exhibited in the fluctuations of the process variables or control outputs. Inefficiency, quality degradation of the product, loss of energy, waste of production, loss of production time, and shortened life cycle for process components are direct effects of a fluctuating process.

This presentation will point out indicators that recognize opportunities for improving the performance of the control system. Examples will help to describe these indicators, the implemented corrections, and resulting benefits. An overview of the variety of approaches to correct or improve the poor performance will be included as well as techniques to maintain the optimal performance into the future.
